Darkness, Magic, and Retro Hardcore: Storming Castle Bloodstone

Remember how much we enjoyed the rabbits and carrots in The Tale of Rabbits? Forget it. This time, things are serious. If the last game was a bright stroll (albeit a bone-breaking one), the new release Bloodstone is a thick concentrate of dark fantasy for the classic ZX Spectrum 128K.

The premise is this: the barrier between worlds has collapsed, Castle Vladstone is shrouded in darkness, and only we can restore order. The setting is brilliantly crafted: you have the “Dark Forest” with living trees, cold dungeons, and the castle itself, where the walls practically bleed ancient magic.

What’s in the gameplay:

  • Combat and Leveling: This isn’t just “mash the fire button.” There are levels for attack and stamina, which increase every 6 units. The more you fight and level up, the faster your strength recovers.

  • Magic: Besides your trusty sword, there are fire spells and Vassar’s protection to shield the hero from the influence of Darkness. To blast enemies with fireballs, you’ll need to collect magic elements.

  • Interaction: The game features plenty of NPCs—from the mysterious Thaddeus to the ancient mage Macethius. You need to talk to them: they provide quests, story hints, and help in making important decisions.

  • Intuition: The hero has an “item scanner” – it helps detect hidden items tucked away inside enemies or objects on the screen.

The Technical Side: The game looks like a legend from the 90s come to life, but with very deep mechanics. Collecting runes (Earth, Fire, Air, Water) , searching for artifacts like the Cross of Valhobos, and managing your limited inventory make this a full-blown adventure rather than a simple arcade game.

Verdict: This is a true gift for those who miss serious and challenging games on the Spectrum. The atmosphere is off the charts: torches cast shadows on ancient frescoes, and the price of a mistake in the dark corridors of the castle is extremely high.

Where to get it and how to support: If you are in Russia, the ideal way is to get it here on ZXOnline. If not, you can still try buying it on ZXOnline via the Robokassa service (it accepts standard Visa and Mastercard, and you can also pay through the Volet e-wallet, which can be topped up with non-Russian cards); there is even a crypto payment option. If none of the above works for you, you can simply head over to the game’s mirror on itch.io and buy it there (though it’s a bit more expensive because we have to compensate for the platform’s fees).

Don’t forget to throw in a donation, seriously. Developing for retro hardware nowadays is pure enthusiasm, and projects like this deserve the attention.

SO.. OKAY. Download it, light the torches, and get ready – Darkness does not forgive mistakes!

Don’t switch off, there’s a lot more interesting stuff ahead!
